Overview

The report presents the company's 2009 sustainability strategy across its Sustainable Operator, Local Sustainable Development Catalyst and Global Sustainability Agent pillars. It reports consolidated Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions of 12.9 million tons of CO2 equivalent, 436 thousand tons of waste generated and extensive water, energy and biodiversity performance. The report also describes Vale's global workforce and human rights, community and safety initiatives. Ernst & Young provided limited assurance over certain sustainability information under the GRI and ICMM frameworks.
